In an effort to reduce pollution in the city and encourage people to scrap their older vehicles instead of abandoning them on the roads, the Delhi government initiated the impounding drive.

Delhi govt lays down rules to seize, scrap, reuse end-of-life vehicles

City residents whose “end-of-life” vehicles have been impounded by authorities for violating environmental norms can now get them released after paying a fine – ₹10,000 for cars, and ₹5,000 for two-wheelers – and giving an undertaking that they will not be driven on city roads, and that the owners have a personal parking space, according to new government guidelines issued on Tuesday.

Delhi Transport Dept issues fresh guidelines for vehicle scrapping. Here’s what you need to know

After several complaints from the public over the scrapping of overaged petrol and diesel vehicles, the Delhi Transport Department has issued step-by-step directions on how and from where these vehicles will be impounded, procedures to follow, and how people can get their vehicles scrapped. Following the orders of the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Transport Department banned all overaged petrol and diesel vehicles in 2021. The department also issued an order stating diesel vehicles older than 10 years will automatically be de-registered from January 1, 2022.

Delhi govt launches drive to send overage vehicles for scrapping

“NOC for diesel vehicles up to 10 years/ less than 15 years old petrol vehicles can be issued for any place in the country. NOC for diesel vehicles above 10 years and petrol vehicles above 15 years will be issued for other states subject to certain conditions,” the official said. The NOC will not be issued for the places which are identified by the state as restricted area in terms of order of NGT directions which had directed the states to identify areas where the dispersion of the air is higher and vehicular density is least.
